Greek Olive Oil Vs Italian Olive Oil

May 19th, 2012 No comments

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could look at a shelf of olive oil and know which one is the best? Many people wonder who produces the best: Greece or Italy? In the contest between Greek Olive Oil vs. Italian Olive Oil there is no ‘knockout’, but there are points scored.

Asking to choose between Greek Olive Oil vs. Italian Olive Oil is like saying ‘Canadian Apples vs. American Apples.’ The winner depends on variety, care, and conditions. It is the same with Greek oils vs Italian oils. Which is better depends a great deal on the care and conditions the oil was harvested and processed under, and not so much which country did the job. It also depends to some extent on the olive varietal used, though only to those with exceptionally sensitive palates.

Italian olive oils flood the American market; most grocery stores sell primarily Italian named oils.

So, if one picks a winner this way, the Greek vs Italian contest is likely to be swept by the Greeks. That’s because most grocery store olive oil is … not very good. It’s usually old, and because it is mass produced its individuality is gone. The Italians have a small problem, because as a country, they consume more than they produce, which means they have to import oil just to satisfy their own demand. So where are they getting all the oil for the Italian olive oils that flood our shelves? From other countries like Spain and Greece.

Greek olive oils have a different problem, one of marketing. There are small to medium sized Greek producers who’ve been trying to break into the ‘American Market’ but find the system difficult. Because grocery stores stock items that will sell in bulk, and because suppliers pay a premium to have their groceries placed on the shelf, you are unlikely to find a great Greek olive oil in your local grocery store, if you can find one at all.

So, how can we choose a good olive oil, whether it’s Greek or Italian? We have to go by taste. Greek oil that’s produced and handled with care is flavorful and fresh, and Italian oil produced the same way will be just as good. After production, time is the second consideration. Even an olive oil that started out life as the best in the world will fade to a shadow of its former glory after years in a bottle. It’s not wine, and doesn’t improve with age. More and more gourmet stores are offering tastings, and it’s a great idea to attend one. If you find an oil you like, whether Greek or Italian (or Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Tunisian) buy enough to last a year. Then do it again next year.

If you don’t have access to an olive oil tasting, it might be helpful to get recommendations from those who have tasted the oils. Change your question from ‘Greek vs. Italian’ to ‘fresh, quality vs. old, mass produced.’ Both Greece and Italy produce very high quality olive oils, the only trick is to find them.

Christine Ellis had her olive oil awakening at the final filtering station in a tiny olive press on a small Greek island. She was shocked that the olive oil had such a distinct, powerful flavor. The olive oils she’d tasted until then could have been canola oil for all the flavor they had. She’s never turned back, and now spends some of her time sussing out good olive oils accessible to Americans and writing her opinions about them at Olive Oil Review

Thick, fizzy hair issues?

May 17th, 2012 2 comments

Question by : Thick, fizzy hair issues?
I have sort of wavy-ish curly hair, and I usually let my hair air-dry, and every time it dries it always fizzes up if I leave it down. If I put it in a pony tail my bangs still fizz though. I use TRESemmé anti-breakage formula shampoo and conditioner, and occasionally use Herbal Essences. I used to use “Pantene Curly hair treatment” and it had frizzy curls, so it didn’t help how I would of liked it to. I wash my hair with cold water, everyday. Should I brush my hair differently?(I brush it bottom to top), or brush it while conditioner is soaking or something? I want it to either be straight or at least neatly curled without any damaging products.

Thank you~

Answer by Alibouber
Do NOT use a brush on curly hair. Brush through it with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Also, if you can, try washing your hair every other day, Washing every day strips hair of natural oils. I recommend drying your hair with a diffuser, or let it dry over night in a bun or a french braid. I also recommend sunsilk anti poof. It tames hair without weighing it down.

Detecting and Diagnosing Temporal Arteritis

May 14th, 2012 No comments

People who get affected by this condition are those who are over 50 years old. Women are more at risk to it than men. The condition makes the blood vessels in the scalp and temple become tender as well as swollen. If ignored and untreated, it can result to stroke or blindness. Diagnosis can be established after a biopsy of the temporal artery. Treatment is usually high doses of cortisone-related drugs or medications.
Among all other complications, vision loss is the major concern when it comes to temporal arteritis. Though arteries in other parts of the body can get affected as the disease progresses, it is vision loss that is the most threatening. This occurs when the inflamed arteries start obstructing blood flow to the optic nerve and the eyes. When there is oxygen deprivation to the optic nerve and retina, permanent vision loss occurs. With the right treatment, this permanent loss of vision can be prevented.
Temporal Arteritis Symptoms
Patients suffering from this condition will notice visual symptoms in one eye then on the other eye. Other symptoms are:
? Scalp tenderness (even combing the hair can be painful)
? Headache
? Pain in the temple area (that can be excruciating)
? Loss of appetite
? Transient blurred vision
? Fatigue
? Fever
? Drooping lid
? Depression
? Sore neck
? Double vision
? Jaw soreness (even when chewing food)
Temporal Arteritis Detection & Diagnosis
When the doctor suspects that you have temporal arteritis, the doctor will suggest blood tests like:
? C-reactive protein test – this protein is produced in the liver and released when the body responds to either an injury or an event which signals inflammation.
? ESR or erythrocyte sedimentation rate – measures the time it takes for erythrocytes to collect in the bottom part of the test tube. These are measured in millimeters. If the ESR is abnormally high, it indicates active inflammation.
? Biopsy of the temporal artery – This is also recommended and performed with local anesthesia. When a piece of the temporal artery is removed, it is examined and magnified for inflammatory cells.
Temporal Arteritis Treatment
When it comes to treating temporal arteritis, an ophthalmologist often works with the internist of a patient. Oral steroid medication is usually the primary treatment for the disease. It aims to reduce the inflammation. Though there are patients who notice an improvement in their symptoms after several days, there are also patients who need a long-term maintenance dosage of such steroids for temporal arteritis relief.

Oily Hair Shampoo

May 11th, 2012 No comments

So every morning I wash my hair, by the time I am getting ready for bed my hair is like a giant grease ball. So I did a little research to find out what causes oily hair, treatments and the best oily hair shampoo for my type of hair which is thick.

Why I Have Oily Hair

For as long as I can remember I have had thick oily hair. So I did a little digging into the causes of oily hair. I found the reason I and most people have oily hair is because of access sebum, which is produced at the base of the hair by the sebaceous gland.

So I found out that my scalp produces the oils so my hair is not oily, but my scalp is. The type of hair you have can reflects on how oily your scalp is, for example straight hair does not get as oily as curly hair.

Treatment Options

You will never get rid of an oily scalp, but you can control it.

So I started looking for a shampoo that cleanses the scalp, which in turn will balance out the flow of sebum.

My Oily Scalp Shampoo

You need to find a cleansing shampoo, but be careful. Some shampoos use harsh chemicals to combat this, so look for one that is on the natural side.

You will have to wash you hair daily. A lot of times since you have oily hair you will not need to use a conditioner because you hair is naturally conditioned. The shampoo I found is naturally based and worked for my right away.

Styling Oily Hair

The more you comb your hair the more you will stimulate the sebaceous glands causing excess oils. You will want to spend as little time as possible fixing you hair so that it will not get too oily.

After I found out why I had greasy hair and how I could treat it, I went online and looked around.

I ordered 3 shampoos which I will not name here. The first one I loved it worked on the first try. The second one I tried had some harsh chemicals in it and broke my scalp out, apparently I have an oily / sensitive scalp. And the third one worked a little bit, but not as well as the first one which I will name below. Just remember find a naturally based shampoo, you want to stay away from harsh chemicals.

I would like to give credit to my big brother doctor Mike for pointing me in the right direction for my research. Also here is a link to the site where I found my oily hair shampoo, their hair care products are naturally base so they are gentle on your hair.
